Why?

Because!

Well, first because I just think it's cool.

But I went searching for it because I've been answering phones and spelling last names and the word 'Deutsche' over the phone a lot lately. Now, 'B' and 'V' sound a lot alike over the phone, as do a number of other letters, so I became interested in how to most efficiantly communicate an individual letter over the phone. Then I figured, "hey, I'll bet the good people in aviation know a thing or two about that." I always knew about "alpha, bravo, charlie", and of course "yankee hotel foxtrot" but didn't really know what the other ones were. So there you have it. Actually there are a lot of different phonetic alphabets used by various groups, but the NATO/International Aviation one is probably the most well known.

Re: Because!

I had that memorized back in the day. But I long since forgot it. Thanks for posting it. In Canada when you give addresses over the phone, since there are 3 letters in each postal code (ie V6H 1M8), people often use that kind of stuff. Usually I would just pull something out of my butt, like Vampire Six Hore (as in filthy whore, after which I'd have to start all over) One Megatron Eight. After I'd finished the person on the other end would be like, "You're American aren't you? Wanker." Click.

Crap. I think I got mixed up again.
